Enjoy All Four Seasons on the Farm
The rich and varied experiences that await you at Arbor Day Farm are revealed as the seasons change. No matter when you visit, there’s always something to enjoy. For a current listing of events and activities, check out our Events Calendar.
After a long winter’s slumber, all of nature begins to burst forth in March, April and May. This is your opportunity to get a front row seat to nature’s best show—with the orchards and flowering trees in full bloom all across the farm.
In May, lilac lovers are in for a special treat. You can meander through more than 200 varieties of lilacs in bloom at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park.
Arbor Day Farm is alive with activity in the summer. The orchards are lush and green, bringing forth peaches, early-season apples and several varieties of grapes in the vineyards. The trails of the Tree Adventure are shaded by towering trees, and wildlife can be found in forested areas.
Plenty of special activities and events are happening during June, July and August—including Sunset & S’mores, Wine, Cheese, & A Walk Among the Trees, and the Art in the Woods exhibit.
As the weather cools and the leaves begin to change, Arbor Day Farm is in full swing. This is your chance to experience first-hand the excitement of the apple harvest, with many popular varieties reaching their peak freshness in September and October. Pick your own apples in the orchard, or shop for your favorites by the bag or the bushel in the Apple House Market.
You can also savor the flavors of fall—including apple pies, hand-dipped caramel apples and apple cider, pressed on-site.
In addition to the traditional apple orchards, Arbor Day Farm is home to the Preservation Orchard—one of the nation’s few collections of antique apple varieties. Some date as far back as the 1600s, with backstories and heritage that almost rival their unique flavors and shapes. On select weekends, sampling of these heritage apples is available.
October brings traditional, no-scare family fun throughout the farm. A corn maze, pumpkin patch and hayrack rides will appeal to all ages.
And as the trees begin to display shades of yellow, orange, red and bronze, the Tree Adventure takes on new appeal.
Embrace the stillness that can only be found in the winter woods at Arbor Day Farm. The winter season brings ample opportunities for bird watching, photo opportunities with snow-draped tree canopies overhead and outdoor fun.
In December, Arbor Day Farm takes on a new life. Visit the Tree Adventure to create holiday themed ornaments from items found in nature. Christmas at the Mansion offers a chance to experience vintage décor, old-time traditions and other holiday-centric activities in J. Sterling Morton’s 52-room mansion.
After enjoying a brisk adventure outside, retreat indoors and warm up with a wine tasting and some shopping at the Apple House Market. Wine tastings are also held most Friday and Saturday evenings in the Lied Lodge lobby, 5:00–7:00 p.m.
