Join us this Arbor Day for a weekend of nature-inspired fun. Arbor Day is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, to teach your kids about Mother nature and help them understand just how important and terrific trees really are.

When is Arbor Day?

National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April.
Arbor Day 2021 is Friday, April 30.

Nebraska City, NE resident J. Sterling Morton proposed the idea for a tree planting holiday called "Arbor Day" at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture in 1872.

It was estimated that more than 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day.

Arbor Lodge Mansion

Morton’s original estate is located here at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park. This Arbor Day, visitors enjoy free admission April 30 through May 2, courtesy of the Arbor Day Foundation.

At Arbor Lodge Mansion, you can:

  • Explore the 52-room estate and learn about the history of Arbor Day.
  • Get a peek into spring planting on the Morton Farm and view vintage postcards of Arbor Lodge.
  • Experience the grand opening of the Women of Arbor Lodge display in a newly restored area of the mansion. This area has never been open to the public.

Weekend Activities

Located in Nebraska City, the 260-acre Arbor Day Farm is home to Lied Lodge, Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, an array of nature-themed attractions, and miles of beautiful forested hiking trails.

Activities at Tree Adventure

Become a Junior Arborist

Talk to a Nature Interpreter before beginning your journey. Pick up an activity booklet that will take you around Arbor Day Farm. Complete the required number of activities and earn an Arbor Day Farm Junior Arborist patch. Learn More

Learn About Trees Through Play and Planting

  • Explore the tree canopy as you make your way from treehouse to treehouse at Treetop Village®.
  • Connect with nature through hands-on activities in the outdoor classroom.
  • Hike wooded trails and ride the ZipKrooz.
  • Create a tree cookie critter to take home, help us gift wrap a tree, make an Arbor Day Game to play with friends.
  • Discover how tree seeds travel and chase a helicopter seed across the sky.
  • Take home a tree seedling (included with Tree Adventure admission). Decorate a container and plant your seedling for an additional cost. Learn More

Orchard Tours

Enjoy a guided tour of the Arbor Day Farm orchards and learn about fruit trees, pollination, pruning, and more.

Saturday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Apple House Market &
Weekend Wine Tasting

Head to the Apple House Market, currently located inside the Tree Adventure building. Shop for Arbor Day Farm apple cider, jams, jellies, honey, and other tasty treats.

Wine tasting will be available all weekend at the Historic Barns.

Stay at Lied Lodge

Farm and Forest Dinner
